Why Life Balance Matters More Than Ever in 2025

THE YEAR was 2008, and as a senior journalist for the Fraser Coast Chronicle, I thrived on uncovering truths and giving voice to the voiceless. It was a life full of stories, deadlines, and the occasional adrenaline rush that came with landing a front-page story. But behind the scenes, my own story was quietly spiralling.

One particular assignment sticks in my mind—a review of a naturopath’s new technology that measured biological age. I was horrified to learn that my biological age was 22 years older than my chronological age, reflecting the state of my body. Erratic basal body temperatures were just the beginning. The naturopath urged me to see a doctor. The diagnosis? Hyperthyroidism, triggered by Graves’ disease and exacerbated by relentless stress.

In hindsight, the signs were glaring. A rapid heartbeat? I chalked it up to excitement. Dramatic weight loss? Surely a result of training with Masters Swimming. What I missed was the pattern: every swim competition left me in a three-day meltdown, my body unable to recover from the adrenaline crash. As it turns out, hyperthyroidism speeds up your body’s metabolism, creating symptoms that can feel like an adrenaline rush, leaving you on a constant high and unable to rest.

The Cost of Ignoring Balance

The media industry was exhilarating, but its demands—night shifts, weekends, public holidays—were out of sync with my husband’s more traditional work schedule. Our debts meant quitting wasn’t an option, but my body was sending distress signals loud and clear. I vowed to find balance, even if it meant reshaping my career.

Two years later, I took a leap of faith and bought an established photography business, aligning my work with a passion I’d harboured since childhood. On Christmas Eve 2010, I bid farewell to journalism, eager to embark on a fresh start. Within two years, I was off medication for hyperthyroidism, a victory I celebrated with cautious optimism.

But life isn’t always straightforward. The photography business came with its own set of challenges: weekend work, long nights editing, and a new kind of exhaustion. Ultimately, I transitioned into corporate communications—a better fit, until three redundancies due to corporate restructures over five years forced me to repeatedly reimagine my life.

It was during this time that my husband died by suicide, an event that reshaped my world in ways I’m still grappling with today. Grief and career turbulence collided, teaching me a lesson I’ll never forget: you can’t pour from an empty cup!

Burnout in the Digital Age

Fast forward to 2025, and the need for balance is more pressing than ever. The COVID pandemic reshaped our lives, but it also left us with a culture of hyper-connectivity. Economic pressures push us to hustle harder, while the “always-on” mentality creeps into every aspect of life.

The statistics are sobering. Suicide rates in Australia are alarmingly high, with stress often a key factor. Beyond the personal toll, burnout costs businesses billions annually in lost productivity and healthcare expenses. Yet, for many of us, slowing down feels impossible.

As John Purkiss so aptly writes in The Power of Letting Go: How to Drop Everything, “When we let go of the idea that we have to do everything ourselves, life becomes much easier.” It’s a simple truth that many of us forget amid the chaos.

Finding Life Balance

For me, balance has been a lifelong work in progress. It’s about recognising when to step back, prioritise rest, and say no—even when it feels like you can’t. Here are a few strategies that have helped me, and might just work for you:

  1. Set Boundaries: Whether it’s work emails or social media, draw a line. The world won’t end if you don’t reply immediately.
  2. Move Your Body: Exercise isn’t just for physical health—it’s a mental game-changer. Even a short walk can do wonders.
  3. Embrace the Power of “No”: Saying no is a skill, not a weakness. Protect your time and energy.
  4. Seek Help When Needed: Whether it’s therapy, a trusted friend, or a supportive community, don’t be afraid to reach out.

The Lesson

Looking back, my journey has been a winding road of mistakes, adjustments, and lessons learned the hard way. The biggest takeaway? Balance isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. It’s not just about avoiding burnout; it’s about living a life that feels whole and meaningful.

Today, I run this website, which aligns with my passions and offers me the flexibility I need. But even now, I have to remind myself to check in, step back, and recalibrate. Balance isn’t something you achieve once; it’s something you cultivate daily.

Taking Steps Towards Balance

So, I ask you this: When was the last time you paused? Truly paused. Not to scroll or binge-watch, but to breathe, reflect, and simply be. If you’re struggling to find balance, take one small step today—a walk, a phone call, a moment of stillness.

Because life is too precious to spend it drowning in stress. Let go of the pressure to do it all. Start with what matters most: your wellbeing.

Feeling down? Help is just a phone call away!

If you or anyone close to you is distressed or experiencing an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) as soon as possible.

Master Sauerkraut with This Simple Guide

IMAGINE turning cabbage into a tangy, crunchy superfood that’s both delicious and healthy. That’s the charm of sauerkraut—a fermented food enjoyed for centuries. For most of my life, though, it was just that odd jar on the supermarket shelf I ignored.

That changed when I attended a workshop by Elisabeth Fekonia, a permaculture teacher. Fermentation had always seemed complex, but Elisabeth’s simple steps—shredding cabbage, sprinkling salt—showed how easy and fun it is to make sauerkraut. By the end of the day, I was hooked. Now, I always have a jar of my homemade sauerkraut in the fridge.

What sealed it for me wasn’t just its simplicity, but its versatility and health benefits. Whether I pair it with a meal or snack on it straight from the jar, I know I’m supporting my gut health. Even better, it fits the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet perfectly.

In this blog, I’ll share what I’ve learned about fermented cabbage—from its history and benefits to tips for making it yourself. Trust me, once you start, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.

What Is Sauerkraut?

Sauerkraut is shredded cabbage fermented with salt. Simple as it sounds, it’s packed with probiotics, vitamins, and a tangy flavour that enhances meals.

I was surprised to learn during Elisabeth’s workshop that sauerkraut originated in ancient China over 2000 years ago, before spreading to Europe. Today, it’s a staple in German, Polish, and Eastern European cuisines.

What I love about making sauerkraut is its hands-on, sustainable process. All you need is cabbage, salt, and time—no fancy equipment or energy-consuming methods. It’s a low-waste, high-reward way to create something healthy and delicious.

Why Sauerkraut Is a Nutritional Powerhouse

Sauerkraut on a plate

Sauerkraut is rich in gut-friendly probiotics, vitamin C, vitamin K, and fibre, making it a great addition to any diet. These nutrients support digestion, immunity, bone health, and energy.

Its low-calorie, nutrient-dense profile makes it ideal for the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, which promotes sustainable weight loss through wholesome foods. Adding sauerkraut to your meals is an easy way to eat better without overcomplicating your diet.

My Journey as a Sauerkraut Convert

I used to think sauerkraut was just for German sausage stalls. But after Elisabeth’s workshop, I discovered its potential. Making it at home—with just cabbage, salt, and effort—became a satisfying hobby.

Experimenting with spices like caraway or mustard seeds and adding shredded carrots has made each batch unique. Knowing exactly what’s in my food adds to the satisfaction.

Having the right tools, like sturdy knives and chopping boards, has made the process even smoother.

Common Questions About Sauerkraut

When I embarked on my sauerkraut journey, I had so many questions. I learned I wasn’t alone—there’s a lot of curiosity around this zesty, fermented favourite. Here are two common questions I’ve found, along with what I’ve discovered.

Does sauerkraut contain live probiotics?
Yes, but only fresh, unpasteurised sauerkraut retains probiotics. Pasteurisation destroys them, so look for fresh versions in the refrigerated section or make your own.

Is it easy to make at home?
Absolutely. All you need is cabbage, salt, and patience. For the best results, use fresh cabbage and consider a quality fermentation kit.

How to Make Sauerkraut

You’ll need:

  • Fresh cabbage (with tight, crisp leaves)
  • Salt (1 tablespoon per medium cabbage)

Optional additions: grated carrots, herbs like dill, or spices such as caraway seeds for extra flavour.

Steps:

  1. Shred the cabbage using a sharp knife or mandoline.
  2. Sprinkle with salt and massage it for a few minutes to release liquid.
  3. Pack the cabbage tightly into a jar, ensuring it’s completely submerged in its brine. Add a little water if needed to cover.
  4. If you’re adding extras like carrots or herbs, layer them in as you pack the jar.
  5. Cover the jar with a cloth or a loose lid to allow airflow.
  6. Leave the jar to ferment at room temperature for 3–7 days, depending on your taste preference. Check daily and skim off any surface scum.
  7. Once it’s reached your desired tanginess, transfer the jar to the fridge to halt the fermentation process.

Homemade sauerkraut can last for weeks in the fridge, but in my house, it rarely stays untouched for that long.

How to Enjoy Sauerkraut

Now that you’ve got your homemade sauerkraut ready, the fun part begins—enjoying it. There are so many delicious ways to incorporate this tangy, probiotic-rich dish into your meals. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Add a tangy crunch to salads.
  • Top burgers or sandwiches.
  • Pair with roasted vegetables.
  • Include in a grazing board.

Sauerkraut is proof that healthy eating can be simple and satisfying.

Sustainability and Sauerkraut

Making sauerkraut is an eco-friendly process that aligns with sustainable living. Fermentation is low energy, requiring only cabbage, salt, and time, making it a resource-efficient method to preserve food.

It’s also a great way to reduce food waste. Instead of discarding unused cabbage, it can be transformed into a long-lasting, nutritious product.

Homemade sauerkraut eliminates unnecessary packaging and makes the most of seasonal produce. Fermentation extends the shelf life of fresh vegetables, allowing you to enjoy them for months.

Where to Buy Sauerkraut in Australia

If you prefer to buy sauerkraut, options are available at supermarkets, health food stores, and markets. Look for unpasteurised varieties in the refrigerated section for probiotic benefits. Artisanal sauerkraut is also available at gourmet shops and farmers’ markets.

Note on Safety
Sauerkraut is generally safe, but some individuals may need to take precautions. Those with histamine intolerance or pollen allergies may experience reactions. People taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors should consult a healthcare professional before including sauerkraut in their diet due to potential interactions.

From Cabbage to Superfood

Whether purchased or homemade, sauerkraut is a nutritious addition to the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet. It supports digestion, boosts immunity, and complements sustainable practices.

Making sauerkraut at home is simple and rewarding. It has improved my health and reduced waste in my kitchen. I encourage you to give it a try—it might do the same for you.

  1. Improved Energy Levels

One of the most immediate benefits of a balanced diet is improved energy levels. When you consume a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats, your body receives a steady supply of fuel throughout the day. Unlike sugary snacks and processed foods that cause energy spikes and crashes, nutrient-dense foods provide sustained energy.

Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and legumes, are excellent sources of long-lasting energy. Proteins from lean meats, fish, and plant-based sources help build and repair tissues, while healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and avocados support cellular functions. Incorporating these foods into your diet ensures you stay energised and focused throughout the day.

  1. Better Weight Management

A balanced diet is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight. By focusing on nutrient-dense foods and proper portion control, you can manage your weight more effectively. Healthy-eating experts emphasise the importance of eating a variety of foods to ensure you get all the necessary nutrients without excess calories.

Consistent eating habits, such as having regular meals and snacks, prevent overeating and help regulate your appetite. Additionally, a balanced diet that includes high-fibre foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains keeps you feeling full longer, reducing the temptation to snack on unhealthy options.

  1. Enhanced Mental Health

The connection between diet and mental health is becoming increasingly evident. Nutrient deficiencies can lead to mood swings, depression, and anxiety. Conversely, a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants supports brain function and mental clarity.

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, are particularly beneficial for brain health. B vitamins, which are abundant in leafy greens, beans, and whole grains, help regulate mood and reduce stress. By incorporating these nutrients into your diet, you can improve your mental health and overall well-being.

  1. Stronger Immune System

A well-balanced diet strengthens your immune system, making you less susceptible to illnesses. Vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc, play a crucial role in immune function. These nutrients help the body produce and maintain immune cells, fight off infections, and repair damaged tissues.

Foods rich in vitamin C, like citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers, boost immune health. Vitamin D, found in fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and sunlight exposure, enhances the body’s ability to fight infections. Zinc, abundant in meat, shellfish, and legumes, supports the immune response. By consuming a variety of these foods, you can fortify your immune system and stay healthy year-round.

  1. Better Digestive Health

Digestive health is directly influenced by your diet. A balanced diet high in fibre promotes regular bowel movements and prevents constipation. Fibre also supports a healthy gut microbiome, which is essential for overall health.

High-fibre foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes help maintain digestive health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. These bacteria aid in digestion, nutrient absorption, and the production of essential vitamins. By including fibre-rich foods in your diet, you can improve your digestive health and help prevent gastrointestinal issues.

  1. Improved Heart Health

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but a balanced diet can significantly reduce your risk. Consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats supports cardiovascular health.

Healthy fats, such as those found in olive oil, avocados, and nuts, help reduce bad cholesterol levels and increase good cholesterol. Whole grains and fibre-rich foods help lower blood pressure and improve heart health. Additionally, antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables protect the heart by reducing inflammation and preventing oxidative damage.

  1. Enhanced Skin Health

Your diet plays a significant role in the health and appearance of your skin. Nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants, support skin health and combat signs of ageing.

Vitamin A, found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens, promotes cell turnover and keeps skin healthy. Vitamin C, abundant in citrus fruits, berries, and bell peppers, supports collagen production and protects against sun damage. Vitamin E, found in nuts, seeds, and spinach, moisturises the skin and prevents oxidative damage. By incorporating these nutrients into your diet, you can achieve a radiant and youthful complexion.

  1. Stronger Bones and Teeth

A balanced diet is essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus are critical for bone health.

Calcium, found in dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods, is necessary for bone density and strength. Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, is found in fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and sunlight exposure. Phosphorus, present in meat, dairy, and nuts, works with calcium to build strong bones and teeth. By ensuring you get enough of these nutrients, you can prevent osteoporosis and maintain a healthy skeletal system.

  1. Better Blood Sugar Control

Maintaining balanced blood sugar levels is crucial for preventing diabetes and other metabolic disorders. A diet rich in complex carbohydrates, fibre, and healthy fats helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and legumes, break down slowly, preventing rapid spikes in blood sugar. Fibre slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, while healthy fats stabilise blood sugar levels. By incorporating these foods into your diet, you can maintain stable blood sugar levels and reduce your risk of developing diabetes.

  1. Longer Lifespan and Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases

A balanced diet not only improves your quality of life but also extends it. By reducing your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, a healthy diet contributes to longevity.

Nutrient-dense foods provide the body with the necessary tools to repair and protect itself. Antioxidants, found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which are linked to chronic diseases. By following a balanced diet, you can enhance your overall health, increase your lifespan, and enjoy a better quality of life.

Unlock Lifelong Wellness with a balanced diet

The benefits of following a balanced diet are vast and impactful. From improved energy levels and mental health to stronger bones and a longer lifespan, the advantages of making healthy food choices are clear. The diet offers a comprehensive approach to nutrition, combining balanced eating with exercise and mental health support. By embracing a balanced diet, you can transform your life and achieve optimal health and well-being.
