Interview with authors Rodriguez and Whiting

Watch authors Rodriguez and Whiting in conversation

Fraser Coast locals will be able to watch an interview between columnist and author Frances Whiting and international bestselling author Deborah Rodriguez on the Fraser Coast Libraries’ Facebook page and YouTube channel this month.

Cr David Lewis said the free Lines in the Sand event would be posted to the Facebook page and YouTube channel at 7 pm on February 25.

He said it was a fantastic opportunity for the local community to enjoy a conversation between two accomplished authors.

“Our regional audience will be among the first to hear Deborah speak in-depth about her latest novel, The Moroccan Daughter, following its release this February,” Cr Lewis said.

He said the writer’s newest story was about forbidden love and family secrets, set in the twisted alleyways of the ancient medina in Fez and up in the heights of the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, with four women caught in a web of lies, clandestine deals and shocking confessions.

How to reserve The Moroccan Daughter

“Library members can reserve The Moroccan Daughter via the libraries’ online catalogue, or by phoning 4197 4220, and the book will be available after it’s published,” Fraser Coast regional librarian Tara Webb said.

A selection of the author’s earlier works was also available to borrow for free in book or ebook formats, she said.

“We’re presenting the interview in conjunction with other libraries around Queensland,” Ms Webb added.

Watch the authors’ conversation

To watch the authors’ conversation, which is a Queensland Libraries initiative in cooperation with Penguin Random House, go to the Fraser Coast Libraries’ Facebook page or YouTube channel on February 25 at 7 pm when the video will be posted.

Books by crime and mystery writers most popular

The top 10 most borrowed adult fiction books in 2020 from the Fraser Coast Libraries reveal users’ love of crime and mystery stories with Lee Child novels taking out three of the top five positions.

Councillor David Lewis said crime and mystery writers also featured strongly in the list of the top 10 most popular authors of 2020 with James Patterson in the number one position.

“Female writers hold an equal number of spots in the top 10 list of most borrowed authors,” Cr Lewis said.

“Romance and fantasy writer Nora Roberts appears in the number two ranking and again in the ninth slot under her crime-writing pseudonym of J.D. Robb.

“It’s also good to see a children’s book author in the top 10 with Daisy Meadows in eighth place.”

Council’s five library branches were inundated during the first week of the New Year with borrowers returning more than 41,000 items.

During the opening week, borrowers also took home almost 17,000 items, Cr Lewis said.

The busy start to 2021 followed a major jump of 49 per cent in the use of the eLibrary last year.

“Fraser Coast Libraries recorded more than 63,000 eBook loans and reserves in 2020, along with 48,000 eAudiobook loans and reserves, as the community felt the impact of COVID-19,” he said.

“The eLibrary proved invaluable during the time when the physical library branches were closed during the early stages of the global pandemic.

“People were able to, and still can, join online and start borrowing ebooks and eaudiobooks for free within one-and-a-half hours.”
