Ernst & Young selects USQ ambassador

USQ Fraser Coast Student Ambassador Matthew McKeon will join Ernst & Young, one of the world’s largest professional service firms, in its Brisbane office next year.

“I’m absolutely stoked,” Matthew said recently after accepting an offer from Ernst & Young to join its graduate program soon after he graduates with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting).

“As soon as I got the offer I accepted it straight away without hesitation,” he said.

Ernst & Young is a global leader in assurance, tax, transactions and advisory services. It is one of the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms along with Deloitte, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Headquartered in London, England.

USQ Fraser Coast Associate Lecturer Ratna Paudyal said Matthew’s appointment with Ernst & Young was a huge achievement, particularly because he competed with 10,000 applicants from throughout Australia.

“He went through very complicated procedure to get the job,” Mr Paudyal said.

Matthew said that every year, about 10,000 people across Australia apply for graduate positions with the big four accounting firms. On average, the firms accept about 450.

“It’s a complex selection process that starts with an online application and saying why you want to work with that firm and that particular business line.  If you pass that, they do series of phone and one-on-one interviews as well as personality and aptitude tests.

“When I made it to the final stage at the assessment centre, I knew I was in with a chance. To then to be accepted by Ernst & Young is the best outcome I could have hoped for.”

Matthew, 33, came to the Fraser Coast from Brisbane with his parents at two years of age.

He attended Torquay State Primary School and later moved back to Brisbane where he worked in retail until taking an office management position in Hervey Bay.

“But I wanted more,” he said. “Accounting is a solid career and I’m good with figures so it made sense to enrol in USQ’s Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting).”

Matthew will join Ernst & Young’s graduate program in March 2014.
