Movie to show earthquake appeal in action

A MOVIE showing Fraser Coast donations being delivered to Nepalese people following their country’s devastating earthquake in April was screened at University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Fraser Coast in June 2015.

USQ Fraser Coast Lecturer Ratna Paudyal said he had received so many enquiries about the work he and the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City had been doing that he had created a video to share.

“I thank everyone so much for their great support in donating to earthquake survivors in Nepal,” Mr Paudyal said.

“The majority of the houses in rural area of Nepal were wiped out.

“Hervey Bay Rotarians collected funds to assist people in my home village, Rasuwa District, who are needy and poor.

“Fellow Rotarian Peter Collins and I travelled to Nepal in May to support the survivors and personally deliver the donations.”

“We collected AUD $13,596 in cash donations as well as 30kg educational materials.

“The school bags, exercise books and stationery such as pens, pencils, sharpeners and erasers were distributed to 1500 children.

“We also donated AUD $4000 for a sanitation project (bought a tractor for rubbish management) and AUD $120 and $60 to two different school kids’ clubs for rubbish management.

“Our next project is distributing school uniforms to children. We are raising funds through the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City.”

USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas thanked everyone who contributed to the cause.

“Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated,” Professor Thomas said.

The April 2015 Nepal earthquake killed more than 8800 people and injured more than 23,000. The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19 people.

It also triggered another avalanche in Mr Paudyal’s home region, the Langtang Valley, where 250 people were reported missing. Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened.
